Biographical Data
Born in Rome, Italy, in 1950. Marco Del Re lives and works in Paris.
He studies architecture in Rome. In 1971 he is one of the cofounders of the theater company Il Patagruppo that creates works by Artaud, Jarry, etc. His first individual exhibition takes place in 1974. In the 80’s he participates in the post-Modern tendency and inscribes, in his far away manner “historical resurgences and quotations” on his work. Between 2004 and 2005 he works on three monumental frescoes, bas-reliefs made with engraved plaster for the foyer of the Salle Pleyel in Paris, commissioned for the opening of the concert hall.
Brief Chronology
In the 70’s, Marco Del Re creates paintings, drawings, engravings, box-sculptures. He makes videos for Art Tapes, a video and artistic performance producer. He alters, scratches, presents Polaroid sequences (Sade, Breton, Roussel series, 1976). In 1978 he begins painting architectures, industrial landscapes, ruins, cities, Italian squares, interiors, etc. His work makes reference to the history of painting, to the memory of architecture. In 1982 figure appears: human figures, often monolithic, like statues, and animals; he sets them in imaginary architectures. In the late 80’s he begins experimenting with different materials: he paints on wood and engraves the covered surface, he makes bas-reliefs on slate, on engraved plaster, paints marble, draws with ink on Nepalese paper, etc. Recently, he has rediscovered the great subjects of painting: female figures (Muses, Grands nus), primeval art (Lascaux, 2001), workshops, interiors, still lives (Tools, 2005), landscapes… He uses bituminous colors, pink ochres; he works with matter and the relationship with the monumental using different scales. He also sculpts, engraves –monotypes– and illustrates books.
