The Foundation
The Stämpfli Foundation is constituted by a board of trustees, composed of the same couple, Pere and Anna Maria Stämpfli, and the notary Lluís Jou, former Director of Language Policy of the Generalitat. At the same time, it has an Advisory Council composed of Serge Lemoine, former director of the Orsay; Henry-Claude Cousseau, former director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris; the art critic Daniel Giralt-Miracle, former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Catalonia, and Lluís Jou himself.
The creation of the Foundation, the inauguration of the exhibition of its initial collection, and the construction of the future Museum of Contemporary Art represent, due to their artistic dimension and philanthropic profile, an event of extraordinary significance in the cultural trajectory of Sitges. The new collection relaunches the central role that this town has exercised in this field for more than a hundred years and adds to those recognized from Romanticism, Modernism, and Noucentisme.
Peter Stämpfli was named Adoptive Son of Sitges in 2004. The active connection that the couple has maintained with this town dates back to 1977, when they organized the first Festivals of Carrer d’en Bosc, where they have their residence in Sitges, which they share with Paris. Since then, the Stämpflis have carried out constant cultural and patronage initiatives in the town.
Peter Stämpfli is a well-known, valued, and highly regarded artist, especially in France, Switzerland, Belgium, and the United States. His work is part of the most prominent public and private collections in Europe, the United States, Japan, and Korea. He has held around sixty solo exhibitions – including at the Centre Pompidou and the Galerie Nationale Jeu de Paume in Paris – and about 230 group exhibitions throughout his long career.
The Foundation’s catalogue, created on the occasion of the exhibition prefiguring the collection – at the Miramar Building in 2010 – was produced by Pascal Le Thorel and published jointly with the Sitges City Council.
