Two large-format installations by Peter Stämpfli are presented for the first time in Catalonia

‘Mon exposition’ displays around twenty works from the late 20th century

The Stämpfli Foundation is exhibiting two installations from the late 20th century by Peter Stämpfli, which are being shown in Catalonia for the first time. Under the title Mon exposition, the exhibition presents around twenty pieces, most of them large-format, together with a new presentation of a selection from the collection.

Mon exposition, by Peter Stämpfli, is the first exhibition of the Stämpfli Foundation since the expansion of the facilities in the spring of 2019. The exhibition is divided into two rooms (1 and 3), which display Stämpfli’s large canvases and are complemented by a new reading of the collection (in Room 2). Rooms A, B and C —located in the new building incorporated into the Foundation three years ago— show Peter Stämpfli’s works grouped into three stages of his artistic career.

Room 1: Five colours. Invited in 1998 to exhibit in the large entrance hall to the auditorium of the Palais des Congrès in Paris, Peter Stämpfli created especially five works of 3 x 3 m in acrylic paint. For the first time since that year, these works are now presented in Sitges in a new installation in which colour and imprint explore new possibilities of his unique theme: the tyre. The works, which follow the same visual language, are expressed in five colours: red, pink, white, green and yellow.

Room 3: The Cordeliers Stained Glass. In 1988, the municipality of the city of Châteauroux, in France, invited Peter Stämpfli to a solo exhibition in the 13th-century Gothic abbey nave of the Cistercian Abbey of the Cordeliers. There he produced seven linear studies in Indian ink and the seven gouaches cut on paper and glued onto canvas measuring 280 x 125 cm.

These works are now presented at the Foundation, accompanied by the studies the artist made for their creation. In addition, the room also presents a large-format photograph showing the exterior of the Abbey of the Cordeliers with the openings of the side windows during the 1988 exhibition.

Room 2: A new selection from the Foundation’s holdings. From the 1960s of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st, artists have continually expanded the boundaries of thematic exploration and the development of all types of techniques.

The 17 exhibited works aim to challenge the viewer to discover the contrasting or complementary aspects between them. The artists included in this selection are: Pierrette Bloch, Mark Brusse, Tom Carr, Philippe Cazal, Carlos Cruz-Díez, Marco Del Re, François Dufrêne, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Jean-Michel Meurice, Olivier Mosset, Jean-Michel Sanejouand, Antonio Seguí, Pierre Tilman, Gérard Titus-Carmel, Kim Tschang-Yeul, Vladimir Velickovic and Jacques Villeglé.
