Permanent collection

Third exhibition

18 October 2014 – 18 May 2015

Selection prepared and curated by Serge Lemoine, professor emeritus at Paris Sorbonne University.

The Stämpfli Foundation presents a new exhibition from its permanent collection, made up of 90 pieces by more than 60 international artists. This new show, selected and curated by Serge Lemoine, groups the works together in four different areas: narrative figuration, abstraction, the particular universes of different creators and works putting emphasis on quantity.

SPACE 1

The Stämpfli Foundation’s collection of art works brings together many different forms of expression, trends and styles, appearing in Europe as of 1960. One of the main currents represented in it is non-realistic figurative painting, often with a strong critical content, that emerged in France starting in the second half of the decade of the sixties under the name Narrative Figuration. This trend, born concurrently with American pop art, brought together in Paris artists from Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Iceland and France. The French capital was a cosmopolitan city that continued to be the art capital par excellence, both for working and exhibiting.

From among these artists, presented in this room are the opposing universes with a well-established message by Peter Klasen and Antonio Segui, Erró’s image-filed collage and works by Peter Stämpfli himself, glorifying the simple forms of reality as conceived by advertising (Rouge baiser) and the industrial world with concrete products, like the tire, essential to the development and practice of driving.

Sabro num. 2, with its breathtaking size, and two large format charcoal drawings are the three works by Peter Stämpfli that have enriched the Foundation’s collection in 2014.

ARTISTS: PERE STÄMPFLI, CUECO, RECALCATI, ARROYO, BERTINI, SEGUI, ERRO, KLASEN

SPACE

Gathered in this room are works which are defined by abstraction: simple, minimalist shapes by Olivier Mosset and Satoru Sato, contrasts by Rafael Canogar and Guy de Rougemont’s columns that distribute color throughout the room.

These works are on display along with sculptures by Takis and Pol Bury, two works that are representative of the kinetic op art that emerged in Europe in the early sixties; Luis Tomasello´s relief with volumes radiating a fluorescent color on the surface of the medium and Horacio Garcia-Rossi´s painting, which has been added to the Stämpfli Foundation´s collection in 2014 and where a beam of light makes its way through the dark space surrounding it and gives it structure.

ARTISTS: MOSSET, SATORU, CANOGAR, CRUZ-DÍEZ, GARCÍA-ROSSI, TOMASELLO, MONINOT, ROUGEMONT, TAKIS, BURY

SPACE 3

In this room you´ll find the paintings explaining their creators’ own particular universe: peaceful in the case of Pierre Buraglio, tragic and murky in Vladimir Veličković´s works, oneiric in Antoni Taulé´s art, evasive and changing in Marc Desgrandchamps´ creation, primitive in the case of Jean-Michel Sanejouand and enigmatic in the photographs by Joël-Peter Witkin.

ARTISTS: DESGRANDCHAMPS, KIJNO/COMBAS, BURAGLIO, WITKIN, VELIČKOVIĆ, TAULÉ

SPACE 4

Assembled in this part of the room are works focusing on the object and which emphasize the notions of number and quantity. Jean-Luc Parant´s work brings to mind a library with all its contents; Gérard Fromanger’s painting, mass; Jan Voss’, accumulation and disorder. Pavlos Dionyssopoulos’s work is made up of mechanically cropped pieces of papers and originally represents the display window of a sock shop.

ARTISTS: FROMANGER, VOSS, PARANT, PAVLOS, SANEJOUAND, RAYNAUD, JACCARD
